GROW Camp – Rising 4th – 7th Grade
“My eleven year old daughter attended GROW camp at the Chattahoochee Nature Center last summer and loved it. Highlights of the program included feeding live chickens daily, picking fresh fruits and vegetables from the garden, preparing recipes as a group using fresh foods and learning about nutrition. The camp also did a fun field trip to a local restaurant to see how they prepare organic and locally grown foods. And the kids were still able to participate in many of the regular camp activities. It was a great experience.”
Marci Miller, parent of a 6th grade GROW Camper
Harvest, play, and discover the ins and outs of a sustainable produce garden at Camp Kingfisher’s GROW Camp! Campers will split the cool morning hours between gathering ripe fruits and veggies, caring for our egg-laying hens, and discovering the cool science of horticulture! Afternoons will be full of classic Camp Kingfisher activities: canoeing on Heron Pond, crafting, hiking, and cooling off in the pool.
GROW GHO, is designed for campers entering 6th and 7th grade, focuses on sustainable gardening techniques, above-ground insects, and growing seasons! GROW GHO campers also love the Farm-to-Table field trip during their second week at camp. Read more below in our highlighted activity section.
GROW BDO, is designed for campers entering 4th and 5th grade, includes topics such as soil diggin’, plant needs, herb growing, and more! Campers should look forward to cleaning and preparing their own fresh snacks from the garden!
How big are the groups?
GROW GHO groups are signed up based on a 1:10 counselor to camper ratio. Groups generally have 10 campers and 1 counselor. GROW BDO groups are signed up based on a 1:9 counselor to camper ratio. Groups generally have 18 campers and 2 counselors. In rare cases, we will increase the GHO ratio to a maximum of 1:12 and the BDO ratio to a maximum of 1:10.
What’s the average day like?
Camp Kingfisher program hours last from 9am-4pm and our FREE aftercare spans 8-9am in the morning and 4-6:15pm in the afternoon. The camper day is split into 6 periods, including lunch inside Kingfisher Hall, and 2 snack times. Each age group’s schedule include 6 periods packed full of time in the outdoors, educational hikes, live animal encounters, swimming, canoeing, science exploration activities, and so much more. Educational content varies based on the session theme.
Highlighted GROW Camp Activity: Fresh-Picked Snacks!
What fun are fresh fruits and veggies if you can’t eat them!? Campers will harvest, wash, and prepare our garden’s fruits and veggies into sweet snacks: smoothies, strawberry salsa, herbed green beans, and more. Our Unity Garden coordinator supervises the safe picking and preparation of all garden crops.
Highlighted Activity: Farm-To-Table Field Trip
The highlight for GROW GHO is sure to be the farm-to-table field trip. First, the campers will donate fresh-picked produce to North Fulton Community Charities. Last year, our campers donated 97.5 pounds in 1 trip! Next, they will sample a snack at a Roswell restaurant with a focus on locally grown produce. Do you own a restaurant that would like to participate? Contact Debby Head, camp director at firstname.lastname@example.org.
