Mad Science rising 2nd - 3rd Grades
Have you ever wondered how trees breathe, why storms occur when warm and cold air mix, or when you can finally wear cool safety goggles and create chemical reactions at Camp K? Then Mad Science Camp is for you! Campers will use the scientific method, hands-on activities, and critical thinking skills to learn not only about what is in nature but how and why nature works the way it does. This camp is open to Barn Owls (rising 2nd and 3rd graders).
How big are the groups?
Mad Science BNO groups are signed up based on a 1:9 counselor-to-camper ratio and generally have 9 campers and 1 counselor and generally have 18 campers and 2 counselors. In rare cases, we will increase the ratio to a maximum of 1:10.
What’s the average day like?
Mad Science campers will experience regular Camp K activities like canoeing, swimming, archery, and arts and crafts. In addition, they will conduct an average of 2 hands-on experiments per day that have been selected for maximum safety, fun, and learning. Experiments might include making homemade volcanoes, potato powered light bulbs, and the classic oobleck.
SCIENCE SPOTLIGHT: MAKE YOUR OWN ROCKS
Everywhere you go, you are bound to see a rock or two. They each have their own characteristics that can be traced back to how that rock was originally formed. So, how are rocks formed and how can you tell which formation formed them? Using clay and crayons, we will be able to demonstrate the compression of particle layers for sedimentary, the slow melting and folding of metamorphic, and the quick melting and hardening of igneous rocks. This is a colorful and kinetic way to understand what’s going on under our feet!
