Nature Exchange Spring Programs and Themes
March 1 - May 30
Regularly Scheduled Programs in Nature Exchange for the Spring
The Science of Sound, March – May
In order to appreciate the harmonies of nature, we must also learn the science of how sound travels in the first place. Learn through hands-on experimentation with different mediums for sound transmission, then apply what you’ve discovered to different habitats in nature and the cool adaptations animals have developed as a result.
Impersonation Station, March – May
Anurans (frogs and toads) make a wide variety of calls. Can you recreate them using man-made items? You might be surprised at just how similar an animal can sound to a comb, bell, and more. Come try your hand at the impersonation station in Nature Exchange.
Engaging with the Egg, March – May
Did you know that bird hatchling development (and future survival) is influenced by the calls of the mother while they are still in the egg? Visit the Nature Egg-change to learn about this fascinating phenomenon, and keep it in mind as our avian friends are nesting this spring.
Indoor Scavenger Hunt, March – May
Whistle while you work as you hunt for themed clues to complete indoor scavenger hunts in the Nature Exchange. There will be a new theme each month, from singing songbirds to amazing amphibians to nature’s noisiest critters. Find answers, earn points, and make learning fun.
Outdoor Scavenger Hunt: Searching for Sounds, March – May
Put on your listening ears and venture out onto CNC’s 127 acres for the spring outdoor scavenger hunt. Pick a spot, close your eyes, and discover nature through sound. How do sounds change as you move about the center? What are the purposes behind the sounds you hear? How do nature’s chorus and humankind’s chorus harmonize? Explore all this and more, then turn in your scavenger hunt for up to 100 NEX points.
Avian Choir Practice, Throughout March
Visit the Nature Exchange to learn about birds’ crystallization period, the all-important process that can make or break the success of an individual bird throughout its lifetime. Explore what makes our avian friends social just like us.
Chorus Starter Home, Throughout April
Visit the Nature Exchange to learn how the Cherokee people described and defined stars. CNC’s homemade constellation viewers bring the night sky indoors. View each constellation and try to match it with the legend that goes along with it.
Screeches and Buzzes and Cries – Oh My, Throughout May
Nature can be quite a bizarre blend of animal sounds. From small insects to large mammals, many creatures have their own contribution to the chorus. Match the sound to the animal, then go outside and see if you can pick out the sound on CNC’s 127 acres.
