Job Title: Heron Pond Canoe Specialist
Hours: 40-50 hours per week
Classification: Nonexempt, hourly, seasonal
Reports to: Camp Directors

 

Position Purpose:

All staff at Camp Kingfisher are hired to:

  • lead campers as a positive, caring role models
  • provide campers with fun, positive outdoor learning experiences
  • help campers grow and learn through challenges

The Heron Pond Canoe Specialists lead the development and safe implementation of the canoe program for older campers at Camp Kingfisher. The Canoe Instructors are responsible for teaching up to six interactive canoeing classes per day for rising 4th – 7th graders, leading river trips throughout the season, and fulfilling additional specialist duties at camp.

 

Job Responsibilities:

  • Develop and supervise all aspects of the canoe program for campers entering grades 4-7
  • Submit weekly curriculum
  • Maintain high standards of safety, health, and cleanliness during canoe and other activities
  • Create and lead fun canoe games, skill-building sessions, and nature-exploration activities
  • Lead middle school-age campers on canoeing trips on the Chattahoochee River
  • Assist with orientation and ongoing canoeing training of camp counselors
  • Support program areas such as aftercare, waterfront, pool, all camp activities, and arts and crafts as directed
  • Substitute as a counselor as needed
  • Clean camp facilities as needed/required
  • Attend weekly camp staff and specialist meetings
  • Complete additional duties as assigned

 

Other Job Duties:

  • Contribute to verbal/written evaluations and communication as requested
  • Keeping track of and recording hours worked, requesting director’s approval for any additional hours prior to work

 

Qualifications:

  • Experience (and passion for) teaching or working with children
  • Proficiency & passion for operating canoes and similar watercraft, canoe instruction experience preferred
  • Ability to adhere to and to enforce Camp Kingfisher’s water safety procedures
  • Comfortable in an outdoor setting
  • Background in environmental education, natural history, education, child care, or camps
  • Current First Aid/CPR certification, course provided
  • Canoe training, course provided
  • Willingness to work outdoors during the summer season
  • Ability to lift and carry a canoe
  • Valid GA driver’s license
