Job Title: Canoe Specialist & LIT Specialist
Hours: 40-50 hours per week
Classification: Nonexempt, hourly, seasonal
Reports to: Camp Coordinator

 

Position Purpose:

All staff at Camp Kingfisher are hired to:

  • lead campers as a positive, caring role model
  • provide campers with fun, positive outdoor learning experiences
  • help campers grow and learn through challenges

The Canoe Specialist & LIT Counselor leads the development and safe implementation of the canoe program for Camp Kingfisher’s youngest campers; also responsible for teaching up to 5 interactive canoeing classes per day for rising K-3rd graders, leading the Leadership in Training (LIT) program, and fulfilling additional specialist duties at camp.

 

Job Responsibilities:

  • Leading and mentoring the high school-aged volunteers in all aspects of the (LIT) program.

The LIT program is specially designed for high school students who want to build their leadership skills and have an interest in working with children. Their time is split between assisting at the canoe pond and helping with groups. During their 4 weeks session, the LITs are challenged to build skills individually and as a group.

  • Develop and implement leadership, skill-building, and team-building lessons for the LIT program
  • Develop and supervise all aspects of the canoe program for campers entering grades K – 3.
  • Submit a weekly curriculum
  • Maintain high standards of safety, health, and cleanliness during canoe and other activities
  • Create and lead fun canoe games, skill-building sessions, and nature-exploration activities
  • Assist with orientation and ongoing canoeing training of camp counselors
  • Support program areas such as aftercare, waterfront, pool, all camp activities, and arts and crafts as directed
  • Substitute as a counselor as needed
  • Clean camp facilities as needed/required
  • Attend weekly camp staff and specialist meetings
  • Complete additional duties as assigned

 

Other Job Duties:

  • Contribute to verbal/written evaluations and communication as requested
  • Keeping track of and recording hours worked, requesting director’s approval for any additional hours prior to work

 

Qualifications:

  • Must be at least 21 years old
  • Experience (and passion for) teaching or working with children & teens
  • Previous Camp Kingfisher experience preferred
  • Proficiency in operating canoes and similar watercraft, canoe instruction experience preferred
  • Ability to adhere to and to enforce Camp Kingfisher’s water safety procedures
  • Maturity, autonomy, and the ability to set high expectations
  • Comfortable in an outdoor setting
  • Background in environmental education, natural history, education, child care, team building, or camps
  • Current First Aid/CPR certification, course provided
  • Current American Canoe Association (ACA) canoe instructor training, course provided
  • Current Lifeguard certification, course provided
  • Willingness to work outdoors during the summer season
  • Ability to lift and carry a canoe
  • Valid GA driver’s license
