River Roots Science Stations

March 16 – May 31 | OPEN DAILY

A River of History

This year, we’re reconnecting to our “River Roots” to explore how people have depended on the river for more than a thousand years. By tracing the river’s history, you’ll learn how local communities have used, shaped, and changed the river and its watershed—and how those actions still affect it today.

The Chattahoochee River begins as a small stream in the Blue Ridge Mountains and grows wider and deeper as it flows more than 430 miles to meet the Flint River at the Florida border. Its waters connect and help sustain three states—Georgia, Alabama, and Florida. Wow, that’s a lot of people who depend on your river!

Explore the waters of the Chattahoochee River and how it connects us.

With your field notebook in hand, learn all about the river, explore how people have navigated the river, how its winding path and varied landscape have shaped human use, and how wildlife have adapted to the changes brought by human activity.

>> The Imagination Playground returns! You’ll work to construct bridges across the river experimenting with the ways you would need to build across the varying widths of the river.

>> River Roots stations have been designed for ages 8 and up. Younger scientists may need assistance from an adult or older sibling. Some activities involve small parts and may not be appropriate for those 3 and under. Stop by Nature Exchange when you’re finished to share what you learned and earn points to spend or save!

>> Stations are found inside the Discovery Center in the downstairs level and on the grounds. While this exhibit is open daily, some activities may be unavailable in the event of inclement weather.
