Job Announcement

 

The Chattahoochee Nature Center has job openings for Seasonal Canoe Guides. Canoe Guides are responsible for leading trips for the public and providing interpretation, safety, and exceptional customer service to visitors during river (2 ½ hours) and pond canoe programs (1 ½ hours). Trips provide opportunities for both adults and children to learn about the natural history of the plants and animals of the Chattahoochee River as well as the important water quality issues associated with it. Guides must also provide canoeing instruction. This is a seasonal, part-time, non-exempt position that reports to the Education Programs Supervisor. Guides commit to signing up for at least 4 evening river programs and at least 1 daytime river program or pond program per month (all trips may not occur).


The Chattahoochee Nature Center is a not-for-profit environmental organization established in 1976 in Roswell, Georgia. We offer competitive rates of pay as well as a relaxed work environment.

 

Duration and Hours


Seasonal Position, mid-March – November
April – May, September: Saturdays – Sundays: 4:30 – 8:30 PM
June – August, Saturdays – Sundays: 5:30 – 9:30 PM
October, Saturdays and Sundays: 4:00 – 8:00 PM
November, Saturdays and Sundays: 3:00 – 7:00 PM
Family Canoe Days, April – August: Saturday 9:00 AM – 1PM, September – October: Saturday 10:30 AM – 2:30 PM
Several Specialty Trips on Friday evenings and daytime trips on weekdays/weekends throughout the season.
Private Canoe Excursions: Scheduled as requested

 

Job Responsibilities

 

  • Guide at least 4 evening programs a month sharing information on the natural history of the Chattahoochee River
  • Guide at least 1 daytime program a month providing an introduction to canoeing or a daytime river program
  • Attend mandatory classroom and on the water training (scheduled in March and April)
  • Transport canoes and gear to river, and assist in gear maintenance (including lifting)
  • Participate in end-of-season close-up, including hauling gear to off-season storage
  • Support the efforts of all staff and volunteers at CNC
  • Assist in managing and organizing canoe supplies as needed
  • Additional duties as assigned

 

Skills and Qualifications

 

  • Must be at least 18 years old, college degree, or actively pursuing a degree, or equivalent experience
  • Moderate to advanced canoe skills on the river (including ability to swim)
  • Excellent instruction skills, including teaching canoe skills
  • Knowledge of GA natural history and ecology (additional training provided)
  • Enthusiasm and respect for nature
  • Interpretation experience in a natural setting preferred
  • CPR/First Aid Training (training provided)
  • Dependability and professionalism with groups
  • Exceptional Customer Service
  • Must be able to lift and carry a canoe (50lb+)
  • Ability to work in a team
  • Willingness to work outdoors in any conditions (heat, cold, potential inclement weather)
  • Valid Georgia Driver’s License
